This summer we saw the most humid of days here in Hawaii and the sun was scorching. My hair can really need some taming when the weather isn’t playing havoc with it. Imagine the trouble my hair has been having with this crazy summer 🙁 I’m needing some help with my summer damaged hair!
Tips to Repair Your Summer Damaged Hair
We did lots of fun things this summer. Our days consisted of going to the beach, to the pool, and spending a lot of time in the sun at soccer and football games. Unfortunately, as you’ve likely figured out by now, summer can be extremely hard on your hair. I’ve teamed up with the folks over at Madison Reed to help us all out and share some tips to repair your summer damaged hair.

DRIED & FRIED Summer Damaged Hair Needing Repair
Did you know your hair literally gets the moisture sucked out of it whenever you swim in the ocean or a pool? We don’t want to stay away from things we love, so what should we do? Restoring natural proteins is essential to returning your locks to optimum health. This is why Madison Reed recommends using a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. The MadisonReed nourishing, color enhancing shampoo and conditioner set is designed to cleanse, hydrate, soften, and strengthen hair.
Hair Tip: If you swim in the ocean or in a chlorinated pool, make sure to rinse your hair with clear water as soon as you’re done. This is a huge step in avoiding sun damaged hair. Just a quick rinse before you head home will work wonders.
Excessive amounts of UV exposure can strip the glossy coating from your hair and change its shade and composition. So what’s the secret for touching up sun-saturated highlights? Hair gloss. It will return silkiness and shine to your lackluster locks. Hair gloss works by closing the hair and cuticle very tightly, which results in a smooth texture that reflects more light. I personally use and love hair gloss. The feel is exceptional 🙂
Hair Tip: Tinted hair gloss can sometimes actually last longer than permanent color. This is because the color absorbs into the hair and works as a stain—all without opening your hair cuticle further. That’s a way to change-up your look and add protection and prevent damaged hair.
Protect & Nourish
Just like how our skin can age prematurely from spending too much time in the sun, so can our hair. It can look weathered and worn from getting too many UVA/UVB rays. To combat the sun, it is helpful to use a shampoo and conditioner that offers UVA/UVB protection. Like sunscreen for our hair. Madison Reed’s shampoo and conditioner both contain lupine flower protein, which offers natural UVA and UVB protection.
Hair Tip: Wearing a hat is the best way to protect possible sun damage hair. Or, if you’re a fashion rebel, you can also wear a scarf or bandanna that coordinates with your swimwear. There are some cute and fashionable hats, you can even show your support for a favorite team at the same time!
