What does March 3rd mean in our home? It means it’s Girls’ Day! This is one of my favorite days to celebrate with my daughters.
Traditionally Girls’ Day is a Japanese Festival for girls. It’s a day to wish health, growth and happiness to the little or not so little girl in your life. The real name for it is Hina-Matsuri, but here in Hawaii we have traditionally just referred to it as Girls’ Day. Another name I’ve heard it called is Dolls day. Hina-Matsuri is considered the Festival of Dolls.
I have always had such a wonderful time dressing up my little girls in special dresses, t-shirts and kimonos. I love to pamper the girls with their favorite mochi. In my house we can never get enough mochi.
Growing up my mom would always shower me with flowers and present me with a new Hina Doll. She would spend so much time looking for new and different ones I hadn’t seen already. My mom would put a lot of time and love into making sure my daughters and I woke up to the beauty of this deeply rich cultural day. Throughout the month (and sometimes longer) she would have a few Hina Dolls displayed on her desk one for me and then one for each of her granddaughters.
If you haven’t heard or celebrated Hina-Matsuri please read about it you’ll be fascinated with the traditions and meaning. You can find some information at a few sites like HinaMatsuri Doll Festival or Kids Web Japan. There are so many other places to look online and learn about this lovely day. The craftsmanship and tradition put into these Hina dolls is breathtaking.
So to all the women and girls out there; Happy Girls’ Day from my family to yours.
For our boys out there, don’t worry. You won’t be forgotten, there are lots of fun things in store for your special day!
