As my kids are getting older and their time on social media is becoming greater there is a need for protecting my children from dangers on the internet. No matter how much I try to limit screen time it’s always there. My children’s classwork, homework and even their assignments are all on the internet.
Protecting our Kids from Dangers on the Internet
With the changing of the times there is nothing more important than Cyber Safety for Kids. The dangers and toxicity are not letting up. In fact those posing dangers on the internet are getting craftier and harder to detect.
What do think some of the things we need to watch out most for? Here are a few things I’ve found while trying to keep tabs on my tweens and teens.
Predators – since there is no way for someone to know whom they are dealing with these predators can lurk behind the screen and our kids will have no clue. They can also prey on children that are going through a rough time and are vulnerable and wanting attention. With their guards down our kids have no clue who they interacting with. Our youth can be targets anywhere on the internet.
Cyberbullying – Some forms of bullying start at very young ages. At school there is bullying but the dangers on the internet of cyberbullying can take on a life of their own. The horrible things that happen on the internet are so hard to protect our kids from. When bullying happens at schools or other places that have some form of supervision you have adults to intervene. Through the worldwide web where is the supervision?
Pornography – You never know what websites may have unsavory pop ups of porn. There may be times where older kids are seeking porn out. Regardless what you personal beliefs are with pornography protecting our children from the dangers of the internet and porn.
Reputation and Character – From texting, sexting, making comments to putting out pictures that will forever be “out there” is a huge concern. These are things that can forever leave a tattoo on your character. With the ease of video streaming and snapchat there are so many ways kids can try to get noticed. They may do things they really don’t want to do or realize the consequences of. No matter the intentions things on the internet are things you can’t completely get rid of. A seemingly innocent message or post can be taken the wrong way and have a tremendous fallout.
