They say that moving house is up there with getting married as one of the most stressful things you can do in your adult life. Having a moving checklist can help reduce the strain and tension that comes with this life changing event. Taking just a few steps can greatly reduce the pressures that come with moving.
6 Tips To Ensure Moving House is Stress Free
Moving can be an awesome thing for your family, with the stressors that come with moving it can also be one of the most hectic and difficult times. There is so much planning and organization that all culminates in one day of stress and panic as you try to move your prized possessions, your kids, and your pets, without losing anything or anyone. Here is my moving checklist to get you through the big move without losing your mind.
Plan plan plan
Being organized might be the best way to make sure that the lead-up to the big day is as stress-free as possible. Put your trust in your list-writing abilities, and write away! Include deadlines, flowcharts, anything you need to give yourself peace of mind. Even the tiniest things need to go on the list – they’re the things you’ll probably wake up sweating about in the middle of the night.
Get as much done as you can before the day
Get your bills paid up to date. Inform your bank, insurance, employer, and anyone else who might care about your change of address. Bulk-buy bubble wrap. Even plan your decor ideas beforehand. I promise, if you do these before the day itself, then the colossal weight off your mind will make the move seem much easier.
Pack an essentials box
When you get into your new home, and you realize you haven’t got the faintest clue which box the kettle is in, that’s when things go wrong. Make sure you have a box with everything you’ll need for the first few hours in the house. Toilet paper, a selection of lightbulbs, candles and matches, tea and coffee, and clothes are a good place to start. You’ll thank yourself for it later.
Enlist the help of people you trust
Ask your friends and family for any help they can offer – you’ll find more of them are happy to help than you expect. Spend some time researching moving companies and getting recommendations. You’ll enjoy the peace of mind knowing you’re not in it alone. The more you delegate and seek help for the less stress you’ll have when moving house.
Take Time Off From Work
You can’t do this over the course of a weekend – you’ll run yourself into the ground and make mistakes. If it’s possible, take a few days off and make sure you do it right. You’ll find the last couple of days of packing a lot easier if you’re attempting it while the kids are still at school.
Take Care of Yourself
Most importantly, look after yourself. You can’t plan and organize every second of the day. Make sure you take some time out for a long relaxing soak in the bath, or a good run around the park to get the endorphin’s flowing. Make sure you eat well and stay hydrated – you’ll need this to be able to focus. It all comes a bit more easily if you’re treating yourself right. Think about getting a massage before the big day, read a book or listen to your favorite music. This will help you to re-center and help you to enjoy the fun and excitement of the new house.
When moving house, preparation is key. You’ll feel a million times better when it comes to moving day knowing all you have to do is move your things from A to B. Just remember to step back and take a deep breath occasionally. Whether you’re downsizing or moving into bigger digs having a moving checklist will ensure moving house is a stress free as possible.
