As many of you know, I’ve worked any many facets of nursing throughout my career. Working in pediatrics, labor and delivery and one of the most humbling positions has been as a nurse working with veterans at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The best moments of my career have been getting the chance to sit and listen to Veteran’s tell their stories and share their service experiences.
It’s a Privilege to Share a Moment with a Veteran Over a Cup of Folgers
When I took on the task of becoming a VA nurse, I was extremely excited to get involved and dedicate myself to the Veterans because of my grandfather’s and uncle’s military service. Growing up my grandfather would sit at the dining room table drinking his coffee and telling me of the many places he’d been and the duties and tasks he had carried out. He took great pride in his military service and even greater pride in telling his grandchildren of the sacrifices and accomplishments he gained.
When I began my new job at the Department of Veterans Affairs, I thought it would be just doing my duties as a nurse. I never realized what deep bonds I would develop with my extraordinary patients. These men and women who have selflessly served our country are full of stories I could never have imagined. Their hearts are huge and their desire to sit and talk over a cup of coffee like Folgers may have seemed simple to me years ago. Now, I see it as one of the biggest honors of my life.
No Veteran I have ever met has gone off to serve our country for the thanks they may get back home. They have served willingly and tirelessly for the love of country and family. The pride abounds when they tell how they decided to serve, where they served and the many experiences they encountered. Some stories are similar to others and some are so much different.
The main theme is they had hardships, as well as great accomplishments during their journey of service in the armed forces. The Veterans tell their stories and love to share with anyone that will listen. This is their way of carrying on, this is their way of processing. Veterans love to tell their stories because this is how we all learn; this is how we can continue the story of their service. I have had the extreme privilege of hearing these amazing stories from Veterans while drinking a cup of coffee.
When we see Veterans it is natural to tell them “thank you” for their time in the military. It’s a genuine response to a group that has given us so much. What I’ve noticed is, yes, that thank you is wonderful, but what these Veterans would truly love is to sit and chat. To have others genuinely sit and listen. Not just hear them but to listen. When we are attentive to them and acknowledge their courage we are giving them more than we could ever imagine. We are validating and showing our true gratitude.
Folgers and Walmart are wanting others to see the importance of taking the time to give back to Veterans in their Share a Cup & A Story Campaign. As we see deals and discounts with the holidays approaching we will also be seeing great discounts and incentives for Veterans Day as well. Folgers wants us to see the value in listening to a Veteran and having them share their life with us. Saying thank you is important but what greater gift can we give then the precious gift of our time. The look on the Veterans faces when they see we truly want to hear about their life is invaluable.
Let’s do more for our Veterans. Let’s show them we care and want to know more about them and their lives. Let’s reach out to our friends and family that are Veterans and to the Veterans in our local communities. Ask them to sit down with a cup of coffee and share their story. These meaningful moments will not only bring validation and joy to a Veteran, I guarantee, it will enrich your life beyond measure.
Do you have a story you’d love to share? Visit Walmart ‘s Folgers Share a Cup & A Story page and share, so others can hear these amazing stories. You can also find out about Walmart’s support of Greenlight a Vet program. This is an amazing way to get involved and show your support.
This Veterans Day let’s do more than just say thank you to our veterans. Let’s do something, let’s listen to them and show them we cherish their stories. Let’s take the challenge and share a moment with a Veteran in the Folgers Share a Cup & A Story campaign. I bet we will all walk away with stories we will cherish for years to come. #sharefolgers #veteransday
