I’ve shared out story of adversity and struggling with PTSD, part of the therapeutic process has been made easier by obtaining an Emotional Support Animal Certificate (ESA) for my daughter’s beloved dog. I can’t begin to tell you how much the support from this furry family member has helped her to cope with her anxiety.
Benefits of Obtaining an Emotional Support Animal Certificate
For those in need of a support animal dealing with taking them where you need to go can be an issue. Animals also have equal rights to share the living space in society. However, many people typically fail to appreciate these rights probably due to different levels of view points on the issues. Such things tend to pose problems for pet owners for whom the animal is just like a close family member.
Especially when you are a tenant seeking affordable accommodation, there might be issues if the building is strict on maintaining no-pet policies. In fact, existing tenants can also get into a soup all of a sudden when the landlord abruptly decides to not allow any pets in the house. However, you should be aware of the fact that the law recognizes the therapeutic value of pet animals helping their owners get over acute emotional conditions. All you have to do to mitigate an insensitive landlord is to furnish an ESA certificate. Knowing the ins and outs of obtaining an Emotional Support Animal Certificate are very important.
What is this certificate?
The certificate is essentially nothing but a signed and dated prescription from a therapist. A licensed doctor should clearly mention over a registered letterhead that you are suffering from a certain emotional condition. It would further clarify the therapeutic importance of the pet in your recovery. According to the Fair Housing Amendments Act, 1988, the emotional support dog letter carries valid recognition. In fact, you can find online reviews where pet owners confirm that the letter has been of immense help even to overturn an imminent eviction notice. This certificate also allows provisions for air travel with the pet according to the Air Access Carriers Act. However, there are still certain conditions that a pet owner must qualify or commit to carrying the validity of an ESA certificate for the animal. You should be fully aware of the limitations and exceptions of the certificate to provide the necessary legal immunity to the pet.
The procedure and qualifications
The procedure is simple. All you have to do is visit an authorized online service where they would ask you to make a payment to access the application form. Three packages are available for you to choose. The letter could either allow the pet to stay with you at the property, allow its air travel, or do both. The application form would require you to furnish the details of your emotional distress. The manual of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM- IV/ V) provides the guidelines for eligible emotional conditions from the owner. These include depression, anxiety, phobias, suicidal tendencies, and other chronic issues such as PTSD and Autism. A registered therapist would review your application to furnish the letter in a few hours.
Your application might face rejection on the grounds of having an unmanageable pet. The landlord can also deny the rights of accommodation if you own a vicious and unmanageable dog that constantly disturbs the peace of the premise. Another important fact you should know is that the emotional support dog letter is not the same as a service dog certificate. Service animals carry a far wider range of responsibilities besides offering emotional companionship to the owner. Therefore, the owner can still register the ESA certified pet at the National Service Animals Registry to redouble the legal immunity for man’s best friend.
Could you or anyone you know benefit from obtaining an Emotional Support Animal Certificate? Have you seen how much a pet can enhance the lives of their owners? I sure have, I’d love to hear your stories.
