We all age; it is a fact of life and happens to us all. Some of us seem to make it look better than others, though. Think of your favorite movie stars and how good they look for their age (especially the ones that haven’t had any work done)! We all look beautiful in our own way. Looking like the “stars” doesn’t make us beautiful it’s who we are inside.
We can’t stop getting older or change our genetics. Yet, there are things we can do to help so we don’t make those common mistakes that often cause premature aging. There are thing we must do and many things we can avoid in order to age gracefully. We want to take care of our bodies and our skin as we get older. Our skin becomes more delicate, so we can’t treat it the same as we always have. I’ve noticed as I’ve gotten older that the more I take care of my body, inside and out the better I feel. It is NEVER too early to start being proactive and caring for ourselves. In fact, I try to teach my young daughter’s things I wish I had known when I was their age.
4 Things to Avoid to Age Gracefully
Don’t Wear Too Much Makeup
You might think that more makeup will make you look younger, but that is not the case. Do you remember in high school that you wore makeup to try to look older? Well, it still works the same when you are older. Too much foundation, for example, can leave the face feeling dehydrated and dry. Too much can leave the makeup looking unnatural. You don’t want to mask your natural beauty; you want to enhance it. So it is a case of less is more!
Don’t Stress About Hair Loss
For some of us, hair loss is genetic and will just happen. For others of us, it can start to thin and may results in bald patches as we get older. One thing that could aggravate it is getting stressed out. So as hard as it may sound, keep calm about it. There are plenty of natural hair loss remedies out there, so it might be worth giving one of those a try.
Don’t Go Without Sunscreen
Sun spots and wrinkles are the most obvious signs of aging skin. So one way to make sure that they aren’t that bad is to make sure you are safe in the sun. You should always use a sunscreen, even in winter. One of the best ways is finding a light foundation that contains SPF in it. Then you don’t have to even think about it. A sunscreen will help to maintain the elasticity of your skin. When you age the elasticity from your skin goes a little. So you don’t want to make it any worse by causing more of it. The most important thing I’ve learned and shared with my patients; if in doubt use sunscreen. Even when you feel the sun isn’t that strong or you may not be exposed for long. Getting into the habit of always having some level of sunscreen applied, is imperative.
Smoking is bad for your health in many ways. It can be the cause of numerous cancers which are harder to fight when you are older. It has bad effects on your teeth, gums and skin too. It can make your skin more wrinkled than non-smokers and dehydrate it. It can stain your teeth, making them a yellowish color. Not a good look if you are trying to age gracefully. So if you can, it is best to avoid!
Aging is a part of a life and it’s something we can embrace and love. At the same time we can take steps to make sure our aging process and our bodies hold up enough for us to enjoy all life has out there for us.
